—–This has been one of those weeks that traditional winter fishing overlaps with early spring fishing and that’s good news for fishermen!
—–Winter fishing in Tampa Bay is still going strong. You can still expect to catch sheepshead, grouper and snapper on the artificial reefs. Fishing along the sandy beaches of Anna Maria Island and Egmont Key might get you some nice pompano too. There are plenty of spanish mackerel around. Try throwing anything bright and shiney around any structure in the Bay.
—–However, we have also been starting to look to the shallow grassflats for springtime patterns of snook, redfish and trout. I netted shiners for bait this week at the SkyWay Bridge. Although you can catch reds, snook and trout on shrimp and artificial lures, shiners are the key to getting a real rally started. The water temperature is still a little chilly for the snook and sunny days with a nice moving tide late in the day will help the bite. On colder days, we have been seeing snook but it has been hard to “turn them on”. The shiners help.
—–Offshore, snapper and red grouper fishing has been good when the weather permits. Last year at this time, I found my first big offshore permit of the year so we will try to go get some of them soon. Stay tuned.
