Tampa Bay Gag Grouper
—The warm weather has continued to hold, and the gag grouper have continued to bite well. Bait has stayed plentiful with the unusually late warmth, and pinfish and pilchards have been the bait of choice.
—Large spanish mackerel and small sharks have been roaming the beaches in large numbers chasing thread fin herring, and have provided non-stop action. However, the main show has been inshore gag grouper. By finding structure in Tampa Bay, you may be able to get some big gag grouper with pinfish as bait. We have been getting them up to 20-25 pounds consistently.
—Heavy tackle is key, and leaders less than 100# test will not be able to withstand the punishment that these strong fish dish out. Good luck out there.
