Anna Maria Island December 2019 Fishing
—Christmas and New Year’s Every aren’t the only things to celebrate in December here on Anna Maria Island. Inshore and nearshore fishing opportunities abound late in the year.
—On inshore trips, my clients are having a blast catching redfish, black drum, sheepshead and mangrove snapper around residential docks. Snook can be found hunkered down in the backs of canals and river spinoffs, where they soak up the sun over muddy bottoms. We are also using some of the huge, negative winter time low tides, to “trap” seatrout, ladyfish and jacks in channels. These fish can provide a ton of action on plastic jigs, when conditions are right.
—Nearshore fishing can also be red hot in December. Weather permitting… my clients are finding mangrove snapper, porgies, grunts, triggerfish, sheepshead, catch and release grouper, and a few hogfish between 3 and 9 miles off Anna Maria Island’s coast. While in transit, we are actively seeking out floating debris, such as crab floats and buoys, in search of tripletail. These bizarre fish actually hide under random floating debris and offer an awesome sight fishing experience. Not to mention, they are one of everyone’s favorite fish for the dinner table!
