October 2019 Fishing “Turns On”
—October 2019 fishing around Bradenton and Anna Maria Island has been as exciting as it gets. The weather was on a welcome “cooling trend,” and the fish started to get excited as well. There were redfish dumping out of the rivers with each rainstorm, providing some great opportunities to catch and release mature redfish in shallow water.

—Even though backwater fishing has been outstanding lately, a persistent red tide outbreak, and associated fish kills, continues to dominate the headlines here on Anna Maria Island, Bradenton and Sarasota. This natural algae bloom consumes the available oxygen in the water as it completes its life cycle, in turn quickly suffocating nearby fish. This has made fishing a little more challenging than usual over the past couple of months but that being said, my clients and I have been experiencing some fantastic fishing despite the bad news.

Redfish, Snook and Trout
—With the lingering red tide starting to clear around Anna Maria Island, I have been able to successfully fish parts of Tampa Bay, Terra Ceia Bay and Miguel Bay again this week.
—Snook fishing has been red hot. Most fish are males under 24″, with female fish to 40″+ mixed in. I’m finding the snook really bunched up by size as they stage for the fall feeding frenzy. Live whitebait on a 2/0 sized hook, combined with the lightest possible fluorocarbon leader has been the secret to keeping the bite going.

Kingfish
—As October draws to a close, the fall fishing bite is continuing to fire on all cylinders.
Even though there was a persistent northeast wind this week, kingfish or king mackerel, spanish mackerel, black tip sharks, and bonita made a very strong showing within sight on the Anna Maria Island beach.

Cobia
—Fishing for cobia around Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key and the rest of Tampa Bay in October is truly one of the best times of the year. Snapper are everywhere. Redfish make a big showing. Snook start moving into the backwaters. But one of the things I always hope is that on any given day we may run across some cobia.
