—July is an exciting time because it marks the beginning of gag grouper season! My clients are excited to finally be able to keep a few grouper to bring home for dinner after releasing so many. The regulations allow for each person on my boat to keep four grouper per day, two of which can be gag grouper.
—The morning bite has been very strong with any sort of moving tide, and seems to slow down as the sun and temperature rise. Target structure around Anna Maria Island, and don’t ignore Tampa Bay or the Skyway Bridge; these areas produce this time of year.
—Threadfins are plentiful right now, so I recommend using a sabiki rig to catch a few for the baitwell. Pinfish and small grunts are also great baits.
—These nice grouper were caught while fishing this morning with my brother and dad in Tampa Bay.
