Anna Maria Island Fishing Report

Tampa Bay Tarpon
—Fishing in July in and around Tampa Bay and Anna Maria Island is always eventful. There are tarpon and sharks in the passes and Tampa Bay, trout, snook and redfish on the flats and then snapper, flounder and more at the nearshore reefs and wrecks.
—Blake Cherrington and his mom, Lynn, fished with me a few days ago and we tried a few of these different ways to fish. We started tossing some shiners in the early morning on the edge of some Intracoastal Waterway grassflats and got into a real good bite of sea trout. Then we moved to Bean Point at the northern tip of Anna Maria Island and tried drifting through the pass on an outgoing tide. We stepped-up to heavier gear and used live and dead baits to entice some beautiful, big tarpon to hit. After Blake caught some tarpon we started sight-fising some pods of bait, trying to catch some sharks. Tossing a live bait into the bait balls created a frenzy of action including jacks, small sharks and mackerel.
