Mangrove Snapper, Flounder, Seatrout

This morning’s wind whipped the gulf into a soup, but the mangrove snapper bite was as good as I have ever seen it. The strong tide, wind, low-light, and dirty water made these finicky fish feel more comfortable than they usually are. They seemed to have trouble seeing the hook, lines, and sinkers, and were easier to fool. Whatever the case, my clients managed to get their limit within an hour or so.

Sea trout were eating well this afternoon, and we managed to get into some nearly every-cast action near the grass flats and channel edges with a moving tide. Pilchards, shrimp, jigs, and pinfish are the baits of choice for this ambush predator.

Flounder are also showing up off of the beaches near structure and the sandy areas surrounding it. They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans, and will readily take artificials.
