June 2018-Summer Fishing Anna Maria Island
—The weather, and fishing, here on Anna Maria Island has been phenomenal throughout the month of June.
—Calm seas and clear skies, have allowed my clients and me the opportunity to spend some time fishing near shore (up to 9 miles offshore) in the Gulf of Mexico. Out there, I’m looking for spanish mackerel, mangrove snapper, gag grouper, permit and cobia.

—Fishing action in the Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay, around Anna Maria Island and Egmont Key, has been explosive so far this month, May 2018. My clients have been catching a crazy variety of fish including mangrove snapper, spanish mackerel, kingfish, permit, cobia, bonito, groupers, sharks and more.

—January in Cortez, Florida is the height of stone crab season. The commercial fisherman who make a living catching stone crabs usually have several hundred, to several thousand traps in the water at any given time. Each of these traps is marked with a unique identifying float. These floats are what I am interested in.

Grouper, Gag Grouper, Troll For Grouper
—As the first few real cold snaps start to push through Tampa Bay during November and December, one of my favorite fish, gag grouper, begin to move into shallow waters. Gag grouper season is now, inside Tampa Bay and in the channels surrounding Anna Maria Island. These delicious, and heavy-hitting brawlers stay relatively deep most of the year. As the water temps start to drop below 70°, the large, legal-sized gags move into Tampa Bay, as shallow as 6′.

Tarpon, Flounder, Grouper
—Summer time fishing around Anna Maria Island is in full effect, and migrating tarpon are being caught inside Tampa Bay, and adjacent Egmont Key. I’m seeing best results using live crabs and threadfin herring.
