Incredible Fishing During April 2020
—April has some of the most incredible fishing opportunities around Anna Maria Island and Tampa bay.
—Nearshore, gag grouper provide a big pull, and a great fight, but they are still out of season until June 1 and must be released alive. Mangrove snapper and Spanish mackerel fill the void for dinner out there in the same areas.

Anna Maria Island fishing excursions for folks on vacation have been great in April. The Tampa Bay weather has been windy but there are myriad stretches of mangrove shoreline to hide from the wind. That’s where the springtime snook lay in wait to attack unsuspecting shiners, shrimp, crabs and other prey as they are washed across sandy potholes with the tides.

—Here around Anna Maria Island, spring is quickly turning into summer. The water temperature in Tampa Bay has broken through the “magic” 70°F” mark, and has stayed there for weeks now. This has opened the floodgates, so to speak, on all sorts of fishing. Inshore fishing for snook, trout and redfish, as well as the near shore fishing action for snapper, permit and king mackerel, has been red hot.

—Tampa Bay spring break fishing has been on fire here around Anna Maria Island the past couple of weeks. Snook, redfish, seatrout and the occasional jumbo flounder have been on tap even though we have had some very breezy conditions so far this month.

—Strong tides and a warming weather trend helped the inshore bite really get going the past couple weeks.
—Bait is on the move into Tampa and Sarasota Bays once again, sparking a good seatrout, snook, and redfish bite.
—I’m finding snook, trout and redfish close to mangroves, in potholes on grassflats, and around docks and oyster bars. A live shiner under a popping cork is my go-to rig for these situations.
