Snook Fishing Report
—Here in the Tampa Bay waters surrounding Anna Maria Island, Bradenton and Longboat Key, March 1st signals the opening of snook season. Recreational anglers are permitted to keep one snook per day that measures between 28 inches and 32 inches in total length during March and April. We have been lucky enough to have some early warm weather coincide with the opening this year, so it’s been a great week targeting snook in both Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay! Water temps have been in the low 70°s this week, which is just what your want for springtime snook fishing.

Grouper, Gag Grouper, Troll For Grouper
—As the first few real cold snaps start to push through Tampa Bay during November and December, one of my favorite fish, gag grouper, begin to move into shallow waters. Gag grouper season is now, inside Tampa Bay and in the channels surrounding Anna Maria Island. These delicious, and heavy-hitting brawlers stay relatively deep most of the year. As the water temps start to drop below 70°, the large, legal-sized gags move into Tampa Bay, as shallow as 6′.

Redfish, Snook, Trout
-We have experienced some heavy weather extremes here in Cortez, Florida this week. A late season cold front brought brutal wind and dropped water temps about 10° overnight!
-Despite all that, my clients pounded out a steady bag of seatrout, snook and redfish inshore in and around Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay.

Redfish, Snook, Trout, Sheepshead
—With all the wind around the Tampa Bay area this week, I’ve been forced to stay inshore. My clients have been catching snook along Anna Maria mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and channel edges. We are catching them on free-lined shiners, or under a popping cork. We’ve landed a few nice keeper sized fish, but the majority are sub-slot juveniles. A slot sized snook has every advantage in the fight vs. the angler! About half of big snook hooked, will win the battle and break free somehow.

Grouper, Snook, Redfish, Mackerel
—Fishing near shore structure in Tampa Bay and around Anna Maria Island has been big this month, especially for snapper, spanish mackerel, kingfish, gag grouper, sharks and cobia.
—There is still plenty of bait around the beach with predators in tow. For bait, live shiners and threadfins have been the ticket on the reef. Heavy live chumming really turns the bite on, and keeps it lit.
